Parents Turn to the Science of Parenting Online Resource for Latest Research
Posted 30 August 2010
Parents with inquiring minds want to know more than just buzz words about cyberbullying, video gaming and other hot topics related to raising kids and teens. Now they can get the latest research from the Science of Parenting, a new online resource from Iowa State University Extension.

At www.scienceofparenting.org, parents can subscribe to a blog, get messages on Twitter, listen to podcasts and soon download publications — with reliable, research-based parenting information, said Kimberly Greder, ISU Extension family life specialist and associate professor in human development and family studies.

It’s all about what parents want to know, Greder said. “We look for the hot topics in parenting, find the latest research and advice, and then explain it in understandable terms.”

Greder and a team of graduate students monitor parenting websites and talk with parenting educators for real questions that parents are asking. They also review research from Iowa State and other universities to find the answers to those questions as well as advances in the field.

The Science of Parenting covers a variety of topics, from teaching responsibility to teens, to determining how the amount of screen time affects children’s attention skills in school.

“We’re cutting edge. We keep up with the latest issues that parents may not yet realize are affecting their children. Parents can use the Science of Parenting to stay ahead of the game and, perhaps, manage their stress level, too,” Greder said.

The Science of Parenting online resource is made possible through an ISU Extension partnership with the Iowa Psychological Association and Riverbend Psychological Association.
