Council Announces Mini Grant Awards

The Iowa Arts Council
has awarded $10,740 in the July 2010 round of Mini Grants to 11
organizations and individuals in Belmond, Bondurant, Cedar Rapids,
Dubuque, Fairfield, Kalona, Iowa City, Lovilia, Orange City and West
Des Moines. IAC received 18 eligible applications with requests
totaling more than $17,000.
Mini Grants applicants may request up to $1,000 in funding, which they
must match.
“Public support for these projects is an investment in the artists and
organizations that keep Iowa alive with vitality and creativity,” said
Mary Sundet Jones, Iowa Arts Council administrator. “This small
investment of state dollars reaps rich rewards in terms of quality of
life in our communities.”
Mini Grant applications are due the first business day of the month for
a maximum of $1,000. More information and application guidelines and

“The ‘Art’ of Cultivating Creativity”

“The ‘Art’ of Cultivating Creativity” is a community event hosted by
the Belmond Area Arts Council. IAC funding will be used in part to hire
the “Porch Stompers” for their performance at the event.
Kali Van Baale, Bondurant
Website for the “Modern Dickens Project”
$1,000
Author Kali Van Baale will work with local web designer Stefan Hansen
of 8/7 Central to complete the remainder of “The Modern Dickens
Project” Web site.
Carol Montag, Cedar Rapids
Attendance at the Lamb's Retreat for Songwriters
$1,000
IAC grant funds will support singer/songwriter Carol Montag expenses
attending the Lamb’s Retreat for Songwriters in Harbor Springs, Mich.
Louise Kames, Dubuque
“Sacred Grove”
$975
Louise Kames will create a print installation titled “Sacred Grove” for
the “Voices from the Warehouse District” exhibition in Dubuque.
Toni d’Orr, Fairfield
Creation of Two Artists Books
$1,000
Visual artist Toni d’Orr will create two artist books in limited
editions to be exhibited initially at the Flying Leap Art Space in
Fairfield.
Landlocked Film Festival, Iowa City
Workshop for Directing and Acting in the Independent Film
$1,000
The Landlocked Film Festival includes a professional workshop presented
by Emmy-nominated director Becky Smith and actor Nicholas Downs. The
workshop will cover the relationship between the actor and the director.
Melanie Noel, Iowa City
“Waterways of Iowa”
$1,000
Iowa Poet Melanie Noel will use IAC funding to write poems about the
waterways of Iowa.
Jeanette L. Miller, Kalona
“Parallax, a Book of Poetry”
$765
Poet Jeanette Miller will hire professional editor April Ossmann to
edit and help prepare her book of poetry titled “Parallax” for
publication.
Joseph Plum, Lovilia
“Lavender Moon: A Collaborative Collection of Poetry and Song”
$1,000
Joseph Plum will produce a new work titled “Lavender Moon: A
Collaborative Collection of Poetry and Song.” The artist has been
invited to accompany Chief Golden Eagle of the Yankton Lakota Sioux, to
record and interpret ceremonial songs of the Lakota.
Orange City Christian School, Orange City
Artist in the Schools Residency-Puppetry with Lisa Laird
$1,000
The Orange City Christian School will hire IAC Roster Artist Lisa Laird
of Pockets Full of Fun to conduct a five-day puppetry residency for K-8
students.
Iowa Irish, Inc., West Des Moines
“Two Rivers Feile” Irish Arts and Dance Competition
$1,000
Iowa Irish, Inc. will hire musician David James to play for the “Two
Rivers Feile” Irish Arts and Dance Competition. He will perform with
the dancers and will play a variety of traditional tunes. |
